Description
I have a little story to tell about this Northern Pygmy Owl. A few days before this photograph was taken, a friend of mine sent me a shot she'd taken of a pygmy owl in her yard. I was just a little envious because I'd never seen one before. I've seen lots of other owls, but not a pygmy.
I go for a hike every day and I often go to the same place but it had been qutie awhile since I saw any wildlife on this trail so I decided to go to another spot where I hadn't hiked in a long time. I thought to myself, "I want to see a pygmy owl." I got it in my head what kind of tree I might see it in, although I didn't really know.
Wouldn't you know it, but only five minutes later I saw what looked like a large leaf on the top of an otherwise bare bush off in the distance. I kept staring at it, wondering...could it be? And yes, finally the leaf moved and I realized it was an owl. I knew it had to be a pygmy owl...they're only six inches long at the most, which is smaller than my hand.
I took many shots of my new friend and he was very patient with me. I added several layers of painted backgrounds to this image because the sky was totally overcast and boring. It was a moment that I'll always remember, seeing that tiny owl.
