Description
Photograph of a baby rufous hummingbird sitting on a tiny nest made of lichen and moss, surrounded by cedar tree branches. I have added several textures to the image to create a mood and a more painterly effect. When I first saw the hummer he was sitting quietly on the edge of his nest, with his mother and sibling flying around in the forest closeby, calling to him. I watched the fledgling for about half an hour but had to walk past the nest in order to return to my car. As I walked past, I heard the distinctive buzz of a hummingbird in flight. I turned around just in time to see the tiny bird fly off to join his mother and sibling and all three birds chirped away. I'm quite sure that I witnessed the young hummingbird's first flight. Hummingbirds are born a day or so apart and I'd seen a marked difference in the size of the two young ones. I assume this was the younger bird and he had some catching up to do when it came time to take flight.
Tied for first place in FAA's "Bird's Nests" contest, September, 2018.
