I have a little story to tell about this Northern Pygmy Owl. A few days before this photograph was taken, a friend of mine sent me a shot she'd taken of a pygmy owl in her yard. I was just a little envious because I'd never seen one before. I've seen lots of other owls, but not a pygmy.
I go for a hike every day and I often go to the same place but it had been qutie awhile since I saw any wildlife on this trail so I decided to go to another spot where I hadn't hiked in a long time. I thought to myself, "I want to see a pygmy owl." I got it in my head what kind of tree I might see it in, although I didn't really know.
Wouldn't you know it, but only five minutes later I saw what looked like a large leaf on the top of an otherwise bare bush off in the distance. I kept staring at it, wondering...could it be? And yes, finally the leaf moved and I realized it was an owl. I knew it had to be a pygmy owl...they're only six inches long at the most, which is smaller than my hand....
I am a digital/mixed media artist and nature photographer living on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. I'm surrounded by the ocean, forests, mountains, and abundant wildlife, and these things bring me joy that I hope finds its way into my images. When you view my work, my wish is that you feel a sense of intimacy that deepens your own connection to nature. Aside from photography, one of my passions is creating portraits of cats, dogs, and other animals. I also have growing collections of abstract landscapes, trees, flowers, and musical instruments. I also enjoy creating collages using vintage ephemera from the late 1800's and early 1900's. My work has been published numerous times in books, magazines, calendars, greeting...
