Description
A pair of female Northern Flickers sits on the branch of a hemlock tree, contemplating the suet that hangs nearby. These red-shafted flickers were siblings that I photographed a few times as they fledged and grew up, often visiting my backyard feeders together. I once experienced them doing a private dance together in this same tree and after researching this amazing sight, I discovered that this is something woodpeckers often do when they are getting ready to go their separate ways. It was a sight I'll never forget.
