Description
Photograph of a baby woodpecker in its nest, a cavity in a fir tree. This is a young Northern Flicker, a type of woodpecker that is fairly common where I live in British Columbia. They enjoy suet and I've even seen them eat bird seed occasionally, using their long tongues that are usually used to pry insects from trees to pull seeds from the bird feeder. The baby flicker pictured here was waiting for his mother to return to another feeding, something she did approximately every 10 minutes.
