Description
Photograph of a mother sandhill crane feeding her two-day-old baby chick. I photographed the family of cranes at the George C. Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, British Columbia, Canada. The cranes' area was blocked off so that they wouldn't be disturbed so I stood on a bench at quite a distance to get this shot with my telephoto lens. The mother crane is feeding the baby an insect. At two days old the baby was able to walk awkwardly and would often plunk himself down suddenly after taking a few quick stumbling steps. It was a very endearing scene to watch but I couldn't help but laugh out loud at the chick's awkwardness. The tenderness of the parent cranes shown to their baby is a memory I'll always treasure.
Tied for 2nd place in FAA's "Awww" contest, February, 2014.
3rd place in the Baby Animals contest, February, 2014.
1st place in the Baby Animals contest, June, 2014.

Love the contrast between the mom and the orange chick! It's wonderful to see how completely formed and different these small cranes look when babies. Great shot!

Congratulations on you second place Peggy. These guys are so cute:) The size difference is huge. Great shot. I haven't been to Reifel for a couple of years, but I do need to go when I get back home this spring:)
Peggy Collins replied:
Thanks so much, Inge! You know, I never visited Reifel until I moved away from Vancouver. Now I have to take a ferry and drive a couple of hours to get there. Go figure!
