Description
This is a portrait of a tabby cat named Severus. He is party of a family of two cats and one dog. Here is what his owner has to say about him:
"I was walking my dog Dakota early one cold January morning in 2016 and as we walked by a wooded area not too far from my apartment I heard a cat crying. I called to him and he came right out. I took him home and tried my best to find his owners. He had no microchip. The vet said he was 2.5 to 3 years old. I knew that day if I did not find an owner, he would have a home with me. I named him Severus. He hid for the first several weeks, first in the closet, then under my bed, then in the laundry room. I let him hide for as long as he wanted. He always came out to eat, and then would go hide. One day when I was sitting at my desk working, he jumped up on the desk, sat down and looked out the window. He did that for several days. Then one day he walked in front of me and sat down. I had a brush and held the brush up. Severus put his face out which confirmed for me he had had someone who loved him and brushed him. So I brushed him every time he asked. Then one day he stepped slowly down into my lap and wanted me to rub his face.
This is the way Severus operates. He sizes up situations slowly, and after thinking about it,
then he will take action. He does not like to be picked up or carried. After 3.5 years, he still runs and hides when anyone comes over to visit. It took months of my ex coming over every Friday to pick up Dakota for overnight visits for Severus to finally accept him and allow my ex to pet him.
When I moved from Austin to Kyle, it was traumatic for Severus. He wailed all the way to the new house. I moved him last, so that the bedroom would be set up with all smells familiar to him and he could hide under the bed, which he does to this day. Most mornings when I go to work in my office, Severus will come in for his morning routine: jump up on my laptop, have me brush him for a few minutes, then, when he is ready, he climbs down into my lap so I can love on him. Maybe for 5 minutes, maybe for 30, it is up to him. Then he goes to one of the plush blanketsI have out on my desk, makes biscuits for a few minutes, and goes to sleep in front of the window, where he can watch birds in the bird bath not too far from the window and dream.
