Description
After spotting an elk carcass one day on my morning walk I returned later to stake out the area. I stayed just outside my van and surveyed the area but couldn't see anything. It wasn't until I lifted my camera with a 100-400mm telephoto lens that I could spot a well-camouflaged bobcat close to the ferns at the edge of the forest. After about half an hour of observing the bobcat, another (smaller) cat emerged from the woods. I believe the smaller bobcat would've been the larger one's offspring...apparently offspring will stay close to the mother for the first year then strike out to find its own territory. I also think this may be a pregnant female.
I watched the bobcats for about two hours the first day and returned the next day and saw only one of them. They did a little eating but mostly they pawed at the ground and sat around in the light rain, surrounded by ferns and woodsy vegetation. I thought cats didn't like the rain but this one sat on the log in the drizzle for quite awhile.
