Description
The sign outside Chinatown in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, featuring two dragons with the inscription, "Canada's Oldest Chinatown". A cord with colorful red Chinese lanterns hangs below the huge sign. Victoria Chinatown is also the second largest Chinatown in North America, after San Francisco's. It had its beginnings in 1858 when miners migrated from California to what is now British Columbia in Canada.
Also seen in this image is the Yen-Wo Society building at 1713 Government Street. Constructed in 1912, this hybrid Edwardian and Chinese structure houses the Yen Wo Society (a dialect association which was founded by Hakka speakers in Victoria in 1905) and the Tam Kung Temple (the oldest Chinese temple in Canada) on the top (third) floor.
