Description
This was my first sighting of a Snow Bunting. One day my husband had come home to report that he had seen three mystery birds. The next day there were only two. On day three I finally made it to the area where he'd seen the birds, only to find that there was one snow bunting left...I guess the others had moved on. The bird was very trusting and kept getting closer to me while he pecked small seeds from the grass.
Snow Buntings are passerines in the family Calcariidae. They breed on the Arctic tundra in winter. I photographed this lone bunting close to the ocean's shoreline in Qualicum Beach, British Columbia in early November.
