Description
This is a commissioned portrait of a gray tabby cat named Ranger. This kitty's green eyes just pull you right in, don't they? No wonder he was rescued by a woman who makes it a point to show so many cats loving kindness. Here is Ranger's story, written by his "mom":
"I feed several stray cats in my area. One day I drove into my driveway and my neighbor called to me and said that a gray tabby saw my car and started running up the street. The cat came to me in the driveway and introduced himself, arching his back and rubbing against my leg. I know the language. I watched for him after that. He wasn't more than a year old at the time. It was the start of summer 2020 here in Texas and it was getting hot. He lived under all of the cars on my street to some relief from the hot sun. I started opening my garage every morning at 5am and he would run in and lay under my car all day. I called him Ranger. One morning when he arrived there was blood streaming from his tail - a winged predator had tried to grab him - he had a long scratch and a puncture wound under his tail. I sprayed it with bactine a few times, but he would run away. It healed well. Another morning he came in and was limping - his left leg was swollen - I assumed he jumped off of a fence and landed badly. I considered taking him to the vet but decided to observe him for a day or two. He slept in my garage under my car during the day, on his back, holding up his left leg and making air biscuits with his right paw -- then at night he would sleep on my covered porch on a chair with blankets for padding, feeling safe there from winged predators. After two weeks, he started putting weight on the leg. It healed well. As winter approached, I purchased insulation panels for my garage door and bought a heater. Ranger was comfortable and safe, especially during the ice storm when it got down to 0 degrees. The heater kept it at 67 in the garage. Although he wandered the neighborhood during the day, he was always home by 5 pm - often earlier if it was especially cold. I would call him into the garage and close it so I could get him warm. In March he saw my vet, was combo tested, neutered, received all needed vaccines, and was treated for ear mites and ear infections. He no longer wants to wander, he wants to stay home and hang with my cocker spaniel Dakota, whom he loves. I have 5 rescue kitties in residence so it will take some time to transition Ranger into the house slowly. In the meantime, with the summer coming, I am going to rearrange things in my laundry room so Ranger can come inside and be cool and comfortable at night. Which is the life this lovely boy deserves. After all, he asked me on the first day we met if I would take him in and love him."
Day 79 - "Ranger - A Rescued Tabby Cat" is my entry on day 79 of Fine Art America's 100 Day Challenge to create a new work each day.
