Description
A flock of five trumpeter swans including two adults and three juveniles swim gracefully along the shore of the beach near Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia.
This particular group of five swans broke off from about 25 others that were hanging out at the mouth of the Little Qualicum River estuary and did a leisurely tour along the ocean's beach, then swam back to re-join the flock. It was a magical experience to watch them glide gracefully by with the snow-capped mountains in the background. Another photograph is available showing the swans with the mountains and coastal forest in the background.
Trumpeter swans migrate from Alaska and begin arriving along the British Columbia coast at the beginning of November, reaching their peak numbers in January or early February. Spring migration for the Pacific coast population begins in mid- to late February, depending on the weather.
