Description
Black and white version of a pair of black oystercatchers (Haematopus bachmani) combing the rocky beach for tasty clams. These large wading shorebirds will often pluck their food from under the rocks at low tide and quickly walk to a nearby spot before dropping their find and prying open the shell to feast. I don't think I've ever seen an oystercatcher catch an oyster, but I've watched them claim many clams...and I've never seen them eat a clam on the spot. They always wade a few feet away before enjoying their meal. These shorebirds were photographed on the coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
A color version of this photograph is also available.
