Description
Black and white version of a black oystercatcher (Haematopus bachmani) strides along the rocky beach at low tide, a clam in its long beak. These large wading shorebirds will often pluck their food from under the rocks at low tide and quickly walk to a nearby spot before dropping their find and prying open the shell to feast. I don't think I've ever seen an oystercatcher catch an oyster, but I've watched them claim many clams...and I've never seen them eat a clam on the spot. They always wade a few feet away before enjoying their meal. This shorebird was photographed on the coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
A color version of this photograph is also available.
