Description
A tiny 1 inch long white crab approaches some periwinkle shells (sea snails) and seaweed on the sand under the clear ocean water of a tide pool at low tide. The crab's motto is, "Although small, I throw a big shadow." You can see the trail of one of the periwinkles behind the crab. It's fascinating to be looking at these shells then all of a sudden see it move, albeit slowly. The crabs are generally quite active, lifting tiny rocks in search of food or nibbling at strands of seaweed, then sometimes burying themselves in sand. They are everywhere when the tide is low...tidal pools are teeming with sealife. The crabs have a huge variety of colorings and markings, all geared towards camouflaging themselves on the ocean floor.
Day 3 - "King of the Tidal Pool" is my entry on day 3 of Fine Art America's week-long challenge to create a work each day with the theme of "liquid". Although you can barely see the water in this image because it's so clear, it is present and it's life-giving.

Beautiful image, Peggy. Now you have inspired me to look up some old sketches of "micro crabs" ( ant sized)
Peggy Collins replied:
Thanks so much, james! I'm happy I inspired you to go through your old sketches. Some of the crabs I've seen are ant sized too...I'm enthralled by the variety of these creatures!
