This immature Cooper's hawk (Accipiter cooperii) was one of four young raptors who had just fledged. I was told that the birds had been flying around the area for only a few days when I photographed them. Each young hawk could be easily located due to their constant calling to one another. The bird photographed here was a little quieter, however, and sat perched on the branch mostly hidden in darkness while I waited for the sun to come out just a little more. Finally the sun hit his streaked belly feathers as he sat gazing out from the forest, majestic on his tree throne. Normally hawks are very wary of humans so this was my first up-close and personal experience. I will never forget it.
