Photograph of a female rufous hummingbird collecting fluff from a bullrush for her nest close to the marsh. I had been standing there watching a deer walk along the edge of the marsh, through the bullrushes, when I heard a whoosh and the hummer began madly plucking the bullrush of its fluff. Then she zoomed off again within seconds but not before I got a series of photographs.
Hummingbird nests are fascinating...they are made of various things like lichen, moss, and (obviously) bull rush fluff. What's interesting to me is that the nests are held together with spider webs so that the nest will expand as the babies grow. Hummers have several broods each year but they rarely re-use their old nests due to the previous expansion in size because of the growing family. I have several photographs of hummingbirds in and on a nest that I once discovered in the middle of a forest. The nest was located in a cedar tree.
I am a digital/mixed media artist and nature photographer living on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. I'm surrounded by the ocean, forests, mountains, and abundant wildlife, and these things bring me joy that I hope finds its way into my images. When you view my work, my wish is that you feel a sense of intimacy that deepens your own connection to nature. Aside from photography, one of my passions is creating portraits of cats, dogs, and other animals. I also have growing collections of abstract landscapes, trees, flowers, and musical instruments. I also enjoy creating collages using vintage ephemera from the late 1800's and early 1900's. My work has been published numerous times in books, magazines, calendars, greeting...
