Description
Photograph of a great blue heron flying overhead with a branch in its beak which will soon be added to the bird's nest in a nearby rookery of about a dozen nests. I've added a watercolor background to the image to give it a more painterly look, Both the male and female herons take part in collecting branches for their nest, gingerly going out on a limb, literally, to pluck a choice twig or branch. I was fortunate enough to watch this behavior over and over again when I first moved to my home with the heron rookery about a block away. The herons were fond of the tall trees surrounding my place. Unfortunately the following year a lot of the trees that kept the nests from view were cut down in order to build a path for pedestrians and the herons were too exposed to predators, so they abandoned their nests and built elsewhere.
Day 10 - "Heron with Branch for Nest" is my entry on day 10 of Fine Art America's 30 day challenge to create a new work each day for 30 days in a row.
