Description
The Gate of Harmonious Interest is a colorful gateway to Canada's oldest Chinatown (second oldest in North America, after San Francisco's), located on Fisgard Street in Victoria, British Columbia. Two stone lions guard the entryway and colorful paper lanterns can be seen strung along the street. Victoria's Chinatown got its beginnings in the mid-nineteenth century during a massive influx of miners from California. It was once the major entry port for Asian immigrants. In the 1880s it was also the main entry point for the estimated 15,000 Chinese builders of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
