Photograph of a black-tailed deer fawn wading through a creek, bobbing for fallen crab apples. The leaves from big leaf maples and other fall foliage are scattered across the water. I was standing on a small wooden boardwalk photographing a heron in the marsh when I heard a rustling sound behind me and saw a fawn emerge from the woods. Enchanted, I watched as he waded into the creek, walked under the boardwalk directly under me, and started bobbing for fallen crab apples. Eventually he was joined by another fawn and two older deer...a sibling and his parents, I assume. I saw that they had all worked out a routine: first the crows would eat some apples while shaking others loose from the tree. Then the deer would pick through the fallen bounty. This photograph was published in a special limited edition of Canadian Geographic magazine, "Best Wildlife Photos of 2010".
I am a digital/mixed media artist and nature photographer living on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. I'm surrounded by the ocean, forests, mountains, and abundant wildlife, and these things bring me joy that I hope finds its way into my images. When you view my work, my wish is that you feel a sense of intimacy that deepens your own connection to nature. Aside from photography, one of my passions is creating portraits of cats, dogs, and other animals. I also have growing collections of abstract landscapes, trees, flowers, and musical instruments. I also enjoy creating collages using vintage ephemera from the late 1800's and early 1900's. My work has been published numerous times in books, magazines, calendars, greeting...
