Photograph of a black bear up to his neck in ferns and bushes with his mouth full of grass. There are ripe salmonberries behind the bear, who is staring intently at the camera. This was the second time I came across this monstrously big bear while hiking in the forest...I can identify him by the nick in his right ear. He's definitely the biggest bear I've ever seen and he wasn't at all afraid of me. I had my two dogs with me at the time but they couldn't see him because the bushes were too high. The first shot I took of him wasn't any good because the camera kept focussing on some grass in front of the bear so I had to step to the side in order to get this shot. Finally my leashed dogs got wind of the bear and made a move towards the bushes, and that's when he finally turned around and disappeared into the forest. This was the last time I saw "Big Ben".
I am a digital/mixed media artist and nature photographer living on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. I'm surrounded by the ocean, forests, mountains, and abundant wildlife, and these things bring me joy that I hope finds its way into my images. When you view my work, my wish is that you feel a sense of intimacy that deepens your own connection to nature. Aside from photography, one of my passions is creating portraits of cats, dogs, and other animals. I also have growing collections of abstract landscapes, trees, flowers, and musical instruments. I also enjoy creating collages using vintage ephemera from the late 1800's and early 1900's. My work has been published numerous times in books, magazines, calendars, greeting...
