Description
A barred owl perched on the branch of an alder tree stares me down and wins. I saw this gorgeous raptor for a couple of days in a row hunting snakes early in the morning. People were constantly walking by on the path but he wasn't at all distracted. These owls are very well camouflaged so unless you happen to see them fly, you would hardly know they're around. Also, you can't even hear them when they fly...they are completely silent. I guess that's what makes them such excellent hunters.
When I looked at the owl's image on my computer screen, I realized for the first time that they have hearts on their tail!
