Description
Photograph of two barred owls, fledgling owlets, staring down at me from the branch of a maple tree in the middle of a forest, their huge black eyes shining with curiosity. A watercolor effect has been added to my original photograph. Also known as hoot owls, stirped owls, and northern barred owls, these babies were already flying around in a small area, close to their watchful parents, in the woods just off a narrow trail. One of their parents would often call to them with a call that rises in tone, like a question, to which the young owlets would respond with a barely audible high-pitched tone, like a screech. I visited with the owl family most mornings and always see at least some of them in the same area. Occasionally I've seen one of the parent owls rise up from some ferns and fly to a nearby tree branch. I believe it's on the forest floor to hunt snakes but still haven't confirmed that.
Day 7 - "Barred Owl Owlets Watercolor" is my entry on day 7 of Fine Art America's 30 Day Challenge to create a new work each day for 30 days in a row.
