Description
This male rufous hummingbird has some of the most colorful neck feathers (called a gorget) I've ever seen and he's also one of the boldest hummers I've come across. This is a photograph of him soon after he arrived in the spring, after flying all the way from Mexico to where I live in British Columbia. You can see the spring green of the buds blossoming on the bushes in the background of the shot, creating a pleasing bokeh. The other day when I was putting out the hummingbird feeder with fresh nectar, this brave little guy didn't even wait for me to hang it from the hook...he landed on it while I was still holding it and had his fill before flying off. It was kind of thrilling!

Peggy .,.. what a fantastic capture!!!! Glorious bokeh, beautiful color and light ... perfect detail!!!! But I really think the magic of this one is the way birdie is looking right at us all ... right into the camera!!!! Very cool!!! l/f

Thanks so much for for very kind comments, Lois! Yes, he gave me quite the knowing look here, didn't he? I'm 100% sure that this is the same hummingbird that landed on the feeder as I was about to hang it up with fresh nectar. He was inches from my face!
